A new satellite radar mode reshaping high-resolution imaging

This Ph.D. thesis focuses on understanding how targets appear in Long Dwelling Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), an advanced imaging mode that achieves extremely high spatial resolutions down to a few tens of centimeters by increasing the time a target is illuminated through antenna steering. This technique significantly improves azimuth resolution and is particularly valuable for surveillance applications such as monitoring critical infrastructures and characterizing vehicles, ships, and aircraft. However, the wide range of viewing angles introduces complex effects, including changes in target scattering behavior and polarization. The research aims to model these effects using electromagnetic simulations in order to improve the radiometric, phase, and polarimetric interpretation of very high-resolution SAR images.
